Ohio State University launches free online course in infection prevention
Columbus, Ohio, February 10, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — As companies serving the public face increased and continued responsibility to help protect patients, customers, employees and students from COVID-19 and other pathogens, the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University presents a free online course on how to help prevent the spread of infections, emphasizing the important role of cleaning and disinfection in public spaces.
The lesson, “Infection Prevention 101 for Public Spaces“, explores the best infection prevention strategies to help keep public spaces safer. Whether you’re looking for advice on infection prevention programs for your business, for an employee who has taken on new cleaning responsibilities, or for a cleaning professional who wants to improve their understanding of infection control, this course provides important scientific background and practical guidance.
Experience Columbusthe city’s destination marketing organization, has adopted the course as part of its Live Engagement, designed to help revive the city’s vital tourism economy following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We recognize that there is an opportunity to further educate hospitality industry workers with fundamental knowledge about infectious disease prevention,” said Brian RossCTA, President and CEO of Experience Columbus and alumnus of The Ohio State University Hotel management program. “This information is of the utmost importance to ensure the safety and health of the city’s 43 million annual visitors and more than 2 million residents.”
With a focus on healthcare and hospitality, the course content is also highly relevant to other industries as they adapt to their “new normal” and help keep their communities safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic, including retail, offices, schools, restaurants and more.
CloroxPro, one of the leaders in infection prevention education, provided support to help create and launch the course in the Spring 2021 semester.
“This completely free online course helps those responsible for cleaning and disinfecting public spaces understand not only How? ‘Or’ What to reduce the spread of infection, but also Why this foundational knowledge is so critical to improving overall health and well-being in the workplace,” said Anne TourpinCTA, MBA and lecturer in the Ohio State University hospitality management program that gave the course.
With 20 years of leadership experience in the hospitality industry, Turpin has worked with faculty, infection control specialists and other professionals to develop course content. “Completion of the certificate program is valuable on many levels,” Turpin said. “It serves as a visible commitment to healthier environments for guests, patients and team members and it serves as a free professional development opportunity for individuals.”
Doe Kley, RN, CIC, MPH, an infection control specialist with the CloroxPro Healthcare division, is content expert for the Hospitality Management curriculum and supported the development of the Infection Prevention 101 for Public Spaces course. “Many of the infection prevention practices we use every day in healthcare settings also have utility in other public spaces,” Kley said. “There is therefore a strong need for infection prevention education for employers and employees working both in healthcare settings and beyond.”
“Cleaning and disinfection have always played an important role in overall public health,” she said, “and a better understanding of the science of infection control allows companies to implement effective plans at term to reduce the spread of many pathogens in addition to COVID-19.”
