Happiness can seem elusive. In difficult times, the light through the trees may seem non-existent and will never return. But there are reasons for hope, because happiness must not escape you. There are steps you can take to support your own sense of satisfaction that have been scientifically proven to work. A course at Yale called “The science of well-beinghelps you do just that – and it’s available for free via Coursera.

Taught by Dr. Laurie Santos, the course features a series of challenges designed to “increase your happiness and build more productive habits.” To prepare you for missions, Dr. Santos breaks down our misconceptions about happiness and how our minds can trick us into thinking a certain way. It then presents research that will help you make positive changes in your life.

One of the greatest lessons of the Course is that happiness is not a distant destination. It is achieved in the present by performing simple tasks that are practiced on a regular basis. By doing things like meditation, exercising gratitude, and building social connections, you can promote happiness in a lasting, long-lasting way.

Head to Coursera to register for “The science of well-being.” You can audit the course for free or you can pay $49 to work on the assignments. And for more on how happy Dr. Santos is, subscribe to his podcast on the topic titled The Laboratory of Happiness.
