ISRO Invites Students to Apply for Free Online Course in Satellite Remote Sensing

ISRO offers a free online course called Satellite Remote Sensing of Atmosphere, which can be completed in 5 days

ISRO has invited students to apply for a free 5-day online course titled “Satellite Remote Sensing of Atmosphere”. The course, which is delivered by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, would be beneficial for professionals, researchers and students interested in learning the usefulness of satellite observations in atmospheric studies. Participants will also receive a certificate for the course based on 70% attendance. As the number of places is limited, participants will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.

What will ISRO’s free online course in Satellite Remote Sensing cover?

The official website states that the course will provide insight into the retrieval of atmospheric parameters from satellite observations, fog monitoring, precipitation monitoring using visible, infrared and microwave sensors, types of air pollutants, air pollution episodes, air pollution plume monitoring and tropical cyclone tracking among other topics. Some of the topics that will be covered over a period of 5 days are:

  • Overview of techniques for restoring atmospheric parameters from satellite data.
  • Satellite monitoring of precipitation from visible, infrared and microwave sensors.
  • Satellite remote sensing for fog retrieval and monitoring.
  • Application of satellite observations for the monitoring of tropical cyclones.
  • Satellite monitoring of fine particles.
  • Monitoring of gaseous atmospheric pollutants from satellite observations.

How do I register for ISRO’s free online course?

To participate in ISRO’s free online course, interested organizations, universities, departments or institutes must identify a coordinator from their side. The identified coordinator will register their institute online as the node center on the IIRS website, after which all participants must register online through the registration page by selecting their organization as the node center. Those who wish to know more are invited to go through the official brochure for more information.
