Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on Business and Human Rights are free and open to participants from around the world who are actively interested and engaged in business and human rights work and wish to gain a multi-dimensional understanding of current developments, key issues and opportunities for transformation.

The MOOC aims to be relevant to businesses themselves, government officials, grassroots organizations working on business-related issues, workers, and ordinary citizens who wish to inspire transformation in the way businesses and human rights are linked.

This MOOC is a contribution to this understanding. It examines international standards and principles as well as regional and national practices. In particular, it focuses on the links between business and human rights defenders, case law, due diligence and the protection of children’s rights in this area.

Modules
  • Module 1: Focuses on the general international framework on the relationship between business and human rights. In particular, it briefly explains the norms, mechanisms, benefits and challenges of the current setup, especially at the UN and regional levels. Particular attention will be given to the UN Guiding Principles, the UN Global Compact and other recent initiatives, examples and practices.
  • Module 2: Is devoted to specific themes of urgent value: the protection of human rights defenders working on business-related abuses; case law resulting from recent developments; corporate responsibility to respect human rights and the development of mandatory due diligence legislation; the issues of intersectionality and in particular the rights of children in connection with business practices. In doing so, the course analyzes the links with the international framework and gives examples from different regional spaces.
