What is AI anyway? The University of Helsinki Free Online Course

You know Seinfeld episode where Jerry can’t remember the name of a woman he’s dating, only because it rhymes with a part of the female anatomy? He spends the entire episode pretending to push his way through conversations, trying to cover up until he’s outed as a really bad boyfriend. That’s what a lot of people think of artificial intelligence. They know they should know what it is, but they don’t know it. And many of us are too embarrassed to admit it at this point.

If you’ve felt this about the rise of artificial intelligence and AI-based technology, you’re not alone. It’s a complicated subject that’s rife with terms like neural networks, machine learning, and algorithms, terms that seemingly apply to everything from decoding the immune system to planning trips to creating pick-up lines. You shouldn’t blame yourself for feeling a bit lost.

Luckily, that’s a much easier problem to solve than trying to remember what rhymes with Dolores. A new online course from the University of Helsinki in Finland can teach anyone with an internet connection everything they need to know about artificial intelligence. Best of all, the online course has no prerequisites and is free for anyone in the world.

Called on artificial intelligence elements, the English course lasts approximately 30 hours and counts for two ECTS academic credits through the Open University. So far some 24,000 curious Finns signed up to take it. That means there will soon be 24,000 more people around the world who can ask you tough questions about artificial intelligence and leave you fumbling for answers.

Speak the descriptionpeople taking the course will be able to do the following once all is said and done:

  • “Understand some of the major implications of AI”
  • “Think critically about AI news and claims”
  • “Define and discuss what AI is”
  • “Explain the methods that make AI possible”
