ISRO invites students to apply for a free one-day online course in satellite altimetry

ISRO offers a free one-day online course called Satellite Altimetry for Inland Waterbodies for students and professionals

ISRO is inviting applications from interested students, researchers and professionals for a free one-day online course titled Satellite Altimetry for Inland Waterbodies. The objective of the course is to familiarize participants with satellite altimetry and its applications for lake monitoring, reservoir water volume and level, river flow height and hydrological modelling. An overview of advanced remote sensing techniques of altimetry and the use of geospatial technologies for the quantitative assessment and monitoring of inland water bodies will also be given.

The course is delivered by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), a unit of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), which is a leading institute for capacity building and research in the field of remote sensing and geoinformatics. The course is open to professionals from central government, state, private organizations or NGOs engaged in regional and national projects based on hydrometeorology, as well as students and researchers aligned with satellite altimetry research.

What will ISRO’s free online course in satellite altimetry cover?

The course will cover the following topics related to satellite altimetry:

  • Presentation of altimetry, its principles and its future missions.
  • Monitoring algorithms for inland water level estimation.
  • Progress in estimating river flows from altimetry data.
  • Integrated approach to reservoir sedimentation based on altimetric and hydrometric data.
  • Use of satellite altimetry data to calibrate and validate hydrodynamic models.
