Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) and National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL)-IIT Madras will offer the online course called “e-shikshanam” for free.
MDA is a non-profit organization that helps children with “dyslexia,” a learning disability caused by the inability to identify speech sounds and relate them to alphabets and words.
Course content includes introduction to dyslexia, child development, screening, reading, spelling, writing, math, study skills, multiple intelligence.
It will provide remedial support that children with dyslexia can use to cope with difficulties in reading, spelling, writing and math.
The course, ‘e-shikshanam’, is aimed at teachers of primary school students in grades 1-5 and professionals such as occupational therapists, counselors and speech therapists.
Students will only need a computer with speakers and an average internet connection to access the course.
D.Chandrasekhar, President of MDA, said, “MDA strives to disseminate information about what dyslexia is and basic remedial methods that a dyslexic child can use to cope with reading difficulties, spelling, writing and/or math.
The online course makes learning effective and sharpens the innate talents of dyslexic children.
MDA is also developing a similar course for Tamil language teachers.
Dyslexia is one of the reasons for school dropouts that can turn these children into social delinquents. Structured multi-sensory teaching is one way to teach children with dyslexia.
